What drives us
We tap the infinite potentials of light to improve people's lives.
The wish to offer a better quality of life has always been the strongest motivation for us here at OSRAM. We made our cities more livable with the first electric light almost 100 years ago, and increased road safety in the early days of driving with the first high and low beam headlights. Today, digitalization opens up innumerable new possibilities extending far beyond a simple "On" and "Off" of light sources.
Our products and solutions already enable a wide range of digital applications possible – from autonomous driving to the biometric unlocking of mobile devices. And our innovations will continue to improve people's mobility, communication, safety and well-being in the future too.
Our business
As one of the world's leading lighting manufacturers with a track record of more than 100 years, OSRAM primarily offers semiconductor-based products and technologies for a wide range of high-tech applications, from virtual reality to driver assistance systems and connected intelligent lighting solutions in buildings and cities.
Our business operations are conducted by four different business units.
Specialty Lighting (SP)
The SP Business Unit offers a wide range of lamps and systems for diverse sectors and special applications. In terms of revenue, the largest business segment is automotive lighting, with traditional and LED products as well as innovative laser technologies. Another field is specialty lamps for stage, cinema and studio lighting. SP also serves other industrial applications, such as lamps for cleaning that use high-intensity UV light to disinfect the surfaces, gases, or fluids that they irradiate.SP is the largest business unit and the global Number 1 in the automotive sector. Digitalization opens up new opportunities for us in the field of intelligent lighting solutions. To make the best use possible of these opportunities, we are constantly expanding our digital skills through partnerships and acquisitions. Examples include the planned joint venture with Continental AG and the investment in LeddarTech, a specialist in innovative orientation systems for autonomous driving.
Opto Semiconductors (OS)
The OS Business Unit develops, produces, and markets products relating to opto semiconductor technology. This includes both LEDs, which generate visible light for a wide range of lighting applications, and other opto semiconductors, which emit invisible light or receive incoming light and convert it into signals. The main sources of demand for OS products are the automotive industry, industrial and end-customer applications, and, increasingly, the general lighting sector.
OS is a digitalization pioneer. We produced the first LED signal lamps for electrical appliances decades ago. Not to mention the first infrared diodes for remote controls. And, over ten years ago already, our laser diodes made the first night vision assistants in cars possible – the precursors of autonomous driving. In an extremely dynamic, competitive environment, our LED business still remains a pioneer thanks to its unique technological basis – which will enable us to continuously make new digital applications possible in the coming years.
Digital Systems (DS)
The DS Business Unit is a provider of traditional electronic control units and LED drivers, LED modules, light engines (a combination of an LED module and the related electronic control gear), and light management systems. With our digital lighting components, software products and systems we support our clients in planning and implementing projects for intelligent facility automation and the Internet of Things (IoT)
Lighting Solutions (LS)
The activities of the LS Business Unit comprise OSRAM’s luminaires and solutions business. This includes both the production and sale of luminaires and the design and implementation of solutions for internal and external lighting, as well as the service business. Our luminaires are primarily used in customer-specific projects in the fields of street lighting and architectural design, as well as professional interior lighting applications. We also offer fully integrated lighting solutions in order to cater to the growing demand for networked, intelligent lighting.
