Environmental History

The environmental commitment of OSRAM can be traced back to early company history. Back then incandescent light bulbs were considerably more resource efficient than other lighting solutions available at the time.

2016
Recognition  In October 2016, OSRAM has been included once again in the STOXX ESG Leaders indices. The STOXX Global ESG Leaders are evaluated in the areas of environmental, social and corporate governance. The database is provided by Sustainalytics.
Recognition  OSRAM has been included again in the internationally renowned Dow Jones Sustainability World Index. Following a detailed analysis of various sustainability criteria, the lighting company has again achieved a top ranking within the “Electrical Components & Equipment” (ELQ) industry.
Recognition – MSCI, a leading global provider of investment solutions, has listed OSRAM in its Global Environmental Index of. This index is comprised of securities of companies that derive at least 50% of their revenues from environmentally beneficial products and services.
Award – In January 2016, the OSRAM plant Eichstätt has been granted as “BHKW of the year 2015” for its block heat and power plant. The German Association of Cogeneration of Heat and Power awarded the construction as exemplary and groundbreaking.
Recognition – In January 2016 OSRAM was confirmed once again as a member of the FTSE4Good Index Series. Companies in the FTSE4Good Index Series meet strict environmental, social and governance criteria.
Award  OSRAM has been presented again with the Bronze Class Award by RobecoSAM, the Zürich-based sustainability investment company, and has been included in RobecoSAM's 2016 Sustainability Yearbook.

Award – OSRAM has again been granted oekom Prime Status. This status applies to companies that are among the leaders in their industry in terms of sustainability as indicated by the oekom corporate ratings.

2014 Recognition - OSRAM was placed among the best ten percent in the "Electrical Components & Equipment" (ELQ) industry and was immediately admitted to the internationally renowned Dow Jones Sustainability Index World.
Off-grid lighting - New solar stations for people with no access to electricity in Kenya. OSRAM and the Global Nature Fund considerably expand the off-grid project created together with their local partner Light for Life in 2008 for people with no access to electricity in Kenya.
Award - Polish consumers consider OSRAM to be the country's most environmentally friendly lighting brand. Almost 60 percent of people interviewed as part of the “European Trusted Brands” survey think that OSRAM is the most environmentally friendly company on the lighting market.
Award - According to the Green Label certificate, the OSRAM plant in Osasco in the State of São Paulo is much more environmentally friendly than comparable companies.
2013 Certification - All OSRAM plants throughout the world are once more certified to ISO 14001, the international standard for environmental management systems.
Award - OSRAM wins the German Climate and Environment Innovation Prize in the “Climate and Environmental Protection Technology Transfer in Developing and Emerging Countries” category with its off-grid lighting concept “Umeme Kwa Wote”.
Award - Yazaki North America honors OSRAM Opto Semiconductors as the “Green Supplier of the Year”. The Japanese automotive company awards this prize on an annual basis to selected suppliers which take a responsible approach to natural resources and protect the environment.
2012 Diversity - For the first time OSRAM appoints a Chief Diversity Officer. In order for diversity in all divisions of the company to have a creative and productive effect and to add real value, new initiatives, projects and training courses are established.
Award - OSRAM wins the Environment category in the “365 Landmarks in the Land of Ideas” competition with its developments for disinfecting food packaging with UV light.
2011 Emissions – OSRAM SYLVANIA surpasses the goal of 10 percent absolute reduction in corporate greenhouse gas emissions set in 2006 by 100 percent, achieving 20 percent.
Energy – A combined heating and power plant with an absorption cooling unit is installed at the plant in Schwabmuenchen (Germany). This unit produces electricity and generates cold water for the factory.
Award - The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the Department of Energy have awarded OSRAM SYLVANIA the ENERGY STAR Sustained Excellence Award in recognition of its continued leadership in protecting the environment through energy efficiency. This is the tenth consecutive year OSRAM SYLVANIA has received an ENERGY STAR award and is a true testament to its dedication to developing innovative, energy-efficient products.
Award - OSRAM Romania was awarded the Romanian Green Business Index Award sponsored by the Romanian Ministry of Environment. Out of 260 companies involved in the evaluation, OSRAM Romania was chosen as the most sustainable company with the highest rate of social and environmental responsibility within Romania. The “Global Care” program was highly appreciated as a very successful way to drive the business.
2010 Energy – A refurbishment of the illumination system at the OSRAM plant in Slovakia leads to energy savings of up to 20 percent.
Resources – The OSRAM SYLVANIA plant in Versailles (Kentucky) rebuilds its glass furnace to produce lead-free glass. Now, all linear fluorescent lamps manufactured at this facility are completely lead-free.
Recycling – The plant in Ansan (Korea) starts recycling a large proportion of the fluorescent powder previously wasted during the production process. Hence, 4 500 kg of fluorescent powder are reused every year.
Emissions – In 2006 OSRAM SYLVANIA became a member of the U.S. EPA’s Climate Leaders program in order to reduce the corporate-wide greenhouse gas emissions in the USA by 10 percent within 5 years. At the end of 2010, OSRAM SYLVANIA achieves to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 16.3 percent.
Award - OSRAM SYLVANIA was awarded the Clean Fleets Award sponsored by the “Clean Cities” program of the U.S. Department of Energy. The National Clean Fleets Partnership is a voluntary program of the U.S. Department of Energy designed to help reduce fuel consumption of large fleets.
2009 Energy – In the USA, OSRAM SYLVANIA reduces its energy use by 22 percent at all company facilities.
Award - The OSRAM Opto Semiconductor production site in Regensburg won the first prize in the category “Environmentally Compatible Processes”. It was rewarded for its energy efficiency concept for LED production which saves 5 200 tons of CO2 a year.
2008 Certification - All OSRAM plants throughout the world are certified to ISO 14001, the international standard for environmental management systems.
Off-Grid Lighting - On Lake Victoria in Kenya OSRAM has launched a unique project for producing light away from a permanent power supply.
Energy – The air compressor at the plant in Molsheim (France) represents a total of 30 percent of all electricity consumption at the site. After analyzing the possibilities carefully, the site manages to decrease the pressure of the air compressor by 1 bar, which reduces the consumption of electricity by 20 percent.
Recycling – Ammonia in the waste water is recycled by implementing a stripping unit at the plant in Schwabmuenchen (Germany). This is used for the production of 100 000 m³ ammonia-containing fertilizer per year.
Award - OSRAM was awarded the German Sustainability Award on 5th December for its large product portfolio of energy efficient products and its exceptional performance in research and development within this field. Taking place for the first time that year, the prize was awarded under the patronage of the German Federal President Horst Köhler in the category “Products”.
2007 Resources – Together with NEMA (National Electrical Manufacturers Association), OSRAM SYLVANIA sets US-wide standards on maximum mercury level for compact fluorescent lamps (CFL).
Products – OSRAM launches a direct halogen replacement for conventional incandescent lamps that lives twice as long as a incandescent lamp.
2006 Recycling – Together with Veolia Environmental Services, OSRAM SYLVANIA is the first lighting manufacturer in the USA to offer an online lamp and ballast recycling program. In addition, SYLVANIA Lighting Services includes lamp recycling in every service and maintenance contract, sending 9 million lamps from customers to be recycled every year – 6 percent of all lamps recycled in the USA.
Resources – An ion exchange unit for recycling waste water of wire cleaning starts up at the plant in Schwabmuenchen (Germany). The fresh water consumption can be reduced by 40 000 m³ per year.
Certification – So far, 48 out of 52 OSRAM locations have been certified to ISO 14001 which defines globally recognized requirements for environmental management systems.
Award - The OSRAM plant in Sonepat (India) received the Siemens Environment Award which honors environmental awareness and customer focus for the successful introduction of the BEST 4 integrated management system. BEST 4 stands for "Business Excellence Sustainability Task" and thus comprises the compliance with the following international standards: ISO 9001 (quality), ISO 14001 (environment), OHSAS 18001 (occupational safety) and SA 8000 (social responsibility).
Award - The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recognized the OSRAM SYLVANIA fluorescent lamp plant in Versailles, Kentucky, for joining the National Partnership for Environmental Priorities (NPEP) and committing to significantly reducing the elemental mercury content of their linear fluorescent lamps. Since the OCTRON T8 fluorescent lamps were introduced as a replacement for standard T12 fluorescents, the usage of the lamps has prevented the dissemination of over 382 million pounds of CO2. The growth of T8 usage has saved customers more than $26 billion in electricity costs and conserved enough electricity to run all five boroughs of New York City for 4 years.
Award - In 2006, OSRAM SYLVANIA was awarded the ENERGY STAR Partner of the year for the fifth time in a row for its contribution to decrease greenhouse gases. Together with the Department of Energy, the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) thus rewards the production and promotion of energy-saving products. What is more, OSRAM SYLVANIA has voluntarily reduced energy consumption with the installation of highly efficient lighting systems.
2005 Award - The aluPAR® 56 lamp received the Innovation Award of the UK-based Professional Lighting and Sound Association (PLASA). Instead of the heavier glass reflector, the aluPAR® 56 halogen lamp has an aluminium parabolic reflector which is up to 50 % lighter for easier handling and reduced transport costs. The combination of the high-performance halogen capsule as well as the aligned high-precision reflector increases the luminous intensity by up to 10 %. The modular lamp concept also features a mechanically linked reflector and front lens, ensuring that the aluPAR® lamp family can be disassembled and its components disposed of in an environmentally friendly way.
2004 Recycling – OSRAM operates a plant in Bruntál (Czech Republic) that recycles materials that are reused for the production of coils such as acids, the metal molybdenum and the water for rinsing. This saves 100 000 m³ of fresh water per year, which totals up to 600 000 full bathtubs.
Award - The OSRAM site in Penang received the Malaysia National Excellence OSH Award for its efforts in the field of Occupational Health and Safety.
Award - The Hillsboro plant (New Hampshire, USA) received the New Hampshire Governor's Award for its initiative to economize resources. As a result, 13.6 million liters of water, 600 000 kilowatt hour of power and 1 million cubic meters of nitrogen are saved each year. This leads to a reduction of operational expenses of $300 000.
2003 Award – OSRAM Foshan (China) receives the Siemens Environmental Award in the “Sustainable Products and Processes” category for the innovative mercury dosing system in fluorescent lamp manufacture.
2002 Award - In November 2002, OSRAM SYLVANIA received the coveted Excellence Award for the second time. The award is conferred by Businesses for the Bay, a voluntary group of companies, industries, government agencies and other organizations that are committed to implementing pollution prevention in their daily operations.
2001 Resources – The packing factory in Molsheim (France) goes into operation. Packaging to customer requirements is delayed until orders are actually received. The packing is low-energy and customer-orientated, reducing packaging material by 20 percent.
Emissions – OSRAM launches a project in the Moscow underground railway system in conjunction with TÜV-Süddeutschland. The Arbatskaya Station is equipped with energy saving compact fluorescent lamps. OSRAM is the first company to implement the emissions plan adopted at the UN Climate Protection Conference into a project.
1999 Recycling – OSRAM presents a concept allowing all types of lamps to be allmost completely recycled.
Emissions – OSRAM presents a concept for a pilot project on trading emissions at the UN Climate Protection Conference in Bonn.
1998 Certification - The OSRAM plants in Bari, Treviso (Italy) and the glass plant inWellsboro (USA) receive ISO 14001 certification.
1997 Award - OSRAM received the Siemens Environment Award for a recovery plant for pickling acid and molybdenum at the first Siemens Environment Award ceremony in 1997.
1996 Management – An updated version of the Environmental Management Manual is produced.
Award – The company receives first prize in the “Sustainable Products” category in the national competition for the development of the CITYLIGHT DS.
Award – “Environmental Protection Prizes for Industry” of the Federation of German Industry (BDI) as well as the “European Better Environment Award for Industry” from UNEP and the European Commission in the "Eco Design" category.
Award – An ecologically advanced adhesive incandescent lamp package designed by OSRAM wins an award from the German Packaging Institute.
Certification – All OSRAM plants in Germany and the production facility in Molsheim (France) are certified in compliance with the European Commission Eco Audit Directive and receive ISO 14001 certification in accordance with the International Standard for Environmental Management Systems.
1995 Management – An updated version of the Environmental Protection Manual is produced.
Award – The Senate for Urban Development and Environmental Protection awards the Berlin Environmental Protection Prize for the molybdenum recovery plant.
Communication – The company publishes its first Environment Report.
1993 Recycling – The molybdenum recycling system at the plant in Berlin is expanded to include a pickling acid recycling system, saving 180 000 litres acid per year.
1991 Climate Protection – OSRAM starts to convert from chloro(fluoro)carbons to aqueous media in its processes for cleaning and degreasing small lamp components (conversion completed in 1993).
1990 Management – OSRAM groups the responsibilities for corporate environmental protection in the Central Office for Environmental and Radiation Protection. The first Environmental Protection Manual is published and environmental protection directives are specified.
1985 Products – OSRAM launches the OSRAM DULUX EL “energy saver” with integrated electronic control gear.
1982 Cap Separation Process – OSRAM develops the cap separation procedure. With this system it is possible for the first time to recycle most substances in used phosphor lamps.
1981 Recycling – The molybdenum recycling system goes into operation at the plant in Berlin.
1980 Production – The use of arsenic and cadmium in luminescent materials is discontinued in the production of fluorescent lamps. OSRAM introduces the first electronic control gear for fluorescent lamps.
QUICKTRONIC – Through the improvement of the electronic ballast for fluorescent lamps QUICKTRONIC OSRAM achieves energy savings of up to 30 percent per lamp.
1975 Emissions – In the Augsburg glass plants, all glass furnaces are converted from heating oil to natural gas. This reduces annual sulphur dioxide emissions by 77 percent. The filter system for the lead glass furnace in Berlin goes into operation resulting in a 99 percent reduction in dust and lead emissions.
Resources – The company reduces the diameter of fluorescent tubes, substantially reducing the quantity of glass and luminescent materials (7 200 t/year) while maintaining the same luminous intensity.
1972 Communication – The first OSRAM environment brochure focuses on "Mercury in discharge lamps".
1967 Emissions – At its Berlin glass plant, OSRAM converts from generator gas to electric heating in lead glass production, and to heating oil in tube glass furnaces. Generator gas is produced from lignite. Ground pollution from generator gas production is cleared up in 1991.
1963 Safety – OSRAM is one of the first lamp manufacturers to dispense with the carcinogenic metal beryllium in luminescent materials.
1960 Resources – The OSRAM glass plants (Augsburg and Berlin) use broken glass from lamp bulb production as a secondary raw material.
1925 Quality – As the manufacture of lamps at OSRAM underlies strict quality controls, an independent central testing department is set up to ensure the efficiency and quality of the products. This reduces shrinkage and premature failures.
1919 Development – The OSRAM GmbH KG starts operating as a legal entity. The company plays a significant role in the constant research and development of more efficient lighting solutions.
1906 Trademark Registration – The OSRAM brand is registered as a trademark by the Auer-Gesellschaft. Early on, OSRAM lamps are already marketed for their efficiency, as this development provides not only a better quality of life, but is also a great economic benefit to the customer.
