Innovation Management

OSRAM is a globally active company which holds a leading position in the lighting market as a supplier of lamps, luminaires and lighting solutions. The OSRAM brand has represented quality and technological leadership for more than 100 years. A wide range of innovations has helped us shape the development of electrical lighting.

Research and Development

As a leading provider in the global lighting industry, OSRAM occupies a strong position in research and development, both for traditional products and in the growing area of LED-based products. Research and development is crucial to our ability to remain a successful and sustainable integrated lighting producer.

The Corporate Innovation department, whose responsibilities include applied research, reviews the applicability of new theoretical findings to the lighting industry at sites in Germany, the U.S.A., and China, and conducts technology development projects as appropriate. Corporate Innovation’s activities center on the applicability of future technologies, such as organic light emitting electrochemical cells (OLECs).

Efforts are made to protect innovations with patents and other industrial property rights as early as possible. In addition, the “open innovation” approach is also pursued by two dedicated functional units so as to obtain early knowledge of future technologies. In this context, we cooperate with various research institutions, universities, and other companies e.g., on research programs that are funded by institutions such as the European Commission and the Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung (BMBF—German Federal Ministry of Education and Research). Examples for this are:

OSRAM promotes photonics research

Welker Award

Since 1976 the Welker Award has honored research achievements in the field of compound semiconductors. It was named after Heinrich Welker who discovered the III-V semiconductor. OSRAM supports outstanding scientists with the award, which is presented once a year.

KSOP - The Karlsruhe School of Optics & Photonics

Since it was founded in 2006, the KSOP has been providing an interdisciplinary environment for first-class education and research in optics and photonics. As industry partner OSRAM supports the KSOP to educate young scientists for a career in photonics.

Research and Development in the fiscal year 20161

As of September 30, 2016, around 2,4 thousand employees (Full time equivalents) worked at OSRAM’s worldwide research and development locations. Research and development expenses in the fiscal year 2016 amounted to € 334 million. Research and development intensity (the ratio of research and development costs to consolidated revenue) was 8.8%. In fiscal 2016, LED products accounted for around 91% of our R&D expenses.
